Summary/Abstract: This article presents the two-day talks in August 2014 between Gregor Gysi, a prominent politician of the Left Party in Germany, and Friedrich Schorlemmer, a Protestant theologian and a prominent member of the Civil Rights movement in the German Democratic Republic. They both talked about life in the GDR, about the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (German: Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands, SED), the State Security Service, the opposition and the attitudes of the citizens in the country. Gysi’s and Schorlemmer’s memories can be added to the so-called Remembrance Culture (from German: Erinnerungskultur ) and can help in search of the truth in the critical appraisal of the SED dictatorship and in coping with the past.
