Summary/Abstract: The article presents the legal mechanism of operation of Urban Loan Societies in the Polish Kingdom, which were the institutions of urban mortgage loan. The author discusses the issue on the basis of the Loan Society of Lublin and formulates general conclusions about the model of mortgage loan offered by loan societies. At that time, a loan society was the most popular organisational model of mortgage loan, not only urban (Urban Loan Societies) but also landed (Landed Loan Society).Furthermore, the author presents also other institutions of long-term loan in the Polish territories, apart from loan societies, looking for the roots of mortgage banking. This analysis, with its legal and historical perspective, is considered by the author to be a contribution to the discussion on mortgage loan and the status of contemporary mortgage banking in Poland.
