Summary/Abstract: The study focuses on the origin, authorship, purpose, essence and dating of the Notitia Dignitatum, which is an extremely valuable catalogue of the civilian and military positions of the Eastern and Western Empire. It is made a review of the basic literature and its main theories whether exists a common document for the Eastern and Western part of the Roman Empire, or there are two separate illustrated lists of different dates and later united together and given to the young Emperor Valentinian III.
