Summary/Abstract: Sofronie’s riot is considered to be the most outstanding movement of the masses that was registred until those times. This riot has always been in the researchers’ attention, even though the confessional or ideological stress laid upon it have altered in different degrees, ranging from the lowest to the highest, the understanding of the phenomenon. Religious rebelion and reharsal for a future national battle, confessional attitude and social reflex, “the movement against the union with the Church of Rome and of the peasants’ serfdom” has been interpreted differently both in what its prevaling characters is regarded and in reference to the share of each one of its characteristics. It is clear that the riot had a threefold character: religious, social and national. The main reason was a confessional one but the religious requests were also hiding social dissatisfactions and national aspirations, which were yet undefined.
