Summary/Abstract: Introduction. The purpose of the study was to verify the image of the body in young people using wheel chairs, aged 13–16, and with visible motor disability derived from spina bifida (myelomeningocele). The examined group comprised patients of the Fundacja Aktywnej Rehabilitacji [Foundation for Active Rehabilitation]. Materials and Methods. the group in which the study was carried out comprised 17 individuals (9 girls and 8 boys) aged 13–16 and an analogous control group of young people without any disabilities. The study was based on the author’s questionnaire and body evaluation scale. Results. Boys are more inclined to accept their bodies than girls; they also have a more positive attitude and image of themselves. The boys have fewer problems exposing their bodies and do not make comparisons with others, which is common among the girls and gives rise to negative emotions. Young people with visible disability are more realistic about the image of their own body in comparison with the fully abled peers. Conclusions. The obtained results showed a realistic and balanced image of the body among young people. The examined individuals presented an open attitude focused on positive changes, and development possibilities. Young people with disabilities are characterised with high self-consciousness. They declare their interest in changes and are motivated to improve the appearance of their bodies and sense of physical attractiveness. Girls require a higher level of support in constructing a positive image of their bodies.
