Summary/Abstract: Technical protection system of the archives consists of preventive protection, conservation, restauration, microfilming and digitalisation. The preventive protection measures are carried out by everyone in contact with the archives. In carrying out the preventive protection measures in the archive premises of Serbia, and especially in registries, there are numerous oversights which, as a consequence, have frequent damages and poor archives condition. Conservation and restauration of the archives in Serbia is being done in thearchive premises. Currently, there are only 9 conservationists and restaurators in 4 archives employed on these positions. The techniques and methods applied in the process of conservation and restauration, as well as materials and equipment, are somewhat outdated compared to worldwide standards. Given that conservation and restauration are long-term processes, this number of employees is insufficient to repair all the damaged archives in Serbia. Microfilming of the archives in Serbia is performed in archive premises or institutions specialised for this type of work. Archives of exceptional significance are being microfilmed according to financial capabilities of archive premises. There are no written instructions or guidelines that would define the standard of developing microfilms, which sometimes leads to developing microfilms of unsuitable quality and to their non-usability. Digitalisation of archives in Serbia is performed in some archive premises upon their own initiative without defined standards and uniform method of processing. Lately, a lot has been done in this field, so the beginning of systematic and standardized digitalisation of the entire archiving fund of Serbia is to be expected soon. Problems in the technical protection of the archives in Serbia can be solved with the help of a more complete legislation, permanent trainings and logistics support of the archive founders.
