Summary/Abstract: The total fertility rate of 2.1 children per woman of reproductive age is considered to be a level which guarantees the relative stability of the population. At present, almost everywhere in Europe, the fertility rates of European women are below that level. In order to assess the degree of replacement of generations in Europe between 2000 and 2015, a hypothetical birth rate was estimated that would guarantee a balance between generations in the future. In Europe between 2000 and 2015, a total of 125 million children were born, although it should have been born 171 million, so that Europe’s population would not shrink in the long run.
