Summary/Abstract: Economies need new specializations and qualifications. The process of acquiring a new knowledge and skills appropriate for the new specializations and qualifications requires the involvement of both the undergraduate and graduate education institutions and, also, of the training providers for adults. Regardless of the institution that provides the education and the training, it is necessary to focus on identifying the specific needs of the labour market. Accelerating the economic development can only be achieved through strengthening measures of the education system and only by investing in the human capital. Therefore, the intensive assimilation of the modern technologies can be accomplished. Considering this, the article presents an analysis of the educational level of the population. Thus, here it is shown the importance that education has in the context of the urban sustainable development. Companies that operate in the urban areas have higher opportunities to launch the products and the services on the market. Due to the high urban density, it enables a greater interaction between people. Thus, the exchange of ideas and of innovative technologies is more facilitated. From the total Romanian population, approximately 54% reside in urban areas. This means that this population has a higher contribution to the process of research and innovation. A better labour market participation and labour productivity growth involve measures to combat the unemployment. The physical and economic regeneration of the urban communities set one’s sights on the measures regarding the youth involvement on the labour market. From this point of view, the article analyzes the labour situation in Romania.
