Summary/Abstract: Starting from the presentation of the global evolution of the population, the article is an analysis of the human capital in the context of its participation in the sustainable development of the society. The imbalances in the labour market are due to the shortage of human capital. The role of the cities is given by the economic sustainable economy. At the same time, the cities must involve in the actions to decrease the effects of the climate change. The urban sustainable development can be achieved by implementing waste recycling and reduction schemes. Also, due to the architectural characteristics, the contribution of the cities to the sustainable development can be done by increasing the energy performance of the buildings. The transport is another area of green economy which can contribute to the urban sustainable development. The cities that have a high level of development are poles of attraction for the region in which they are found. They affect the economic and social development of the region. The green cities can be models in the process of achieving the urban sustainable development. They can contribute by creating green spaces, by implementing a public lighting based on renewable energy, by using for the urban transport fuel with lower emissions of greenhouse gases or by an energy efficiency of the buildings. Considering the indicators for the green economy, the article presents a case of the indicators referring to the greenhouse gas emissions and to the reused renewable energy.
