Interpretation of heritage as an innovative way of popularisation of the history of the people in the area of contemporary Słupsk county

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to present the theory of heritage interpretation, formulated by the American researcher Freeman Tilden, as an innovative method of explaining the past in an accessible way, and thus of its popularisation. The recipient will not experience an emotional connection with the presented information if they are merely told that the information is valuable. They will want to preserve it only if they understand and appreciate it. This may be achieved if the significance of an object is explained in an accessible way. The rules of interpretation prove useful in this case. Six of them, considered fundamental to the theory, will be presented along with the suggestions regarding their use in the context of the history of the area which now constitutes for the Słupsk county. It is an effort to achieve the long-awaited by F. Tilden dependence in Central Pomerania – through interpretation to understanding, through understanding to appreciation, through appreciation to preservation.
