Summary/Abstract: The author attempts an examination of the mutual relations between historical musical formations and the dynamics of social structure. He focuses on modernism, a crucial moment in history, analysing the period from the late 19th century up until the formation of social-artistic movements known as the avant-garde in the nineteen-twenties. The main part is about atonality in music and its references on society – and the paper strives, among other things, to determine whether atonal music anticipated the changes in social life or was itself an effect of the resultant rearrangement.
