A Contrastive-Translational Approach to Substitution

Summary/Abstract: The study is aimed at investigating the contrastiveness of substitution as a formal linkbetween English and Romanian. The methodology for analysis adopts a translationalperspective, which implies the examination of examples extracted from two translations ofthe same source language text. The findings display a variety of means of translating Englishsubstitutes into Romanian, which lead to conclusions relative to similarities and differencesin the occurrence of substitution in the two languages, determined by structuralpeculiarities, shifts of cohesion and translator preferences.
