The Messiah from the House of Balak

Summary/Abstract: The text is an analysis of artistic work of a Galician classic of Hebrew literature Yosef Agnon (real name Shmuel Yosef Czaczkes). His pseudonym comes from the notion of “agunah”, which, according to the Jewish law, denotes a specific state of enslavement or a woman who can’t be considered free after her husband’s death or disappearance. In Agnon’s prose there are many motifs suggesting the use of such metaphor to talk about the fundamental relation between God and contemporary man.
