Summary/Abstract: The present article summarises information on the non-professional type of translation with the focus on three areas: the history and development of non-professional translating, the present-day efforts to define and categorise non-professional translation and translator, and the outlook concerning non-professionalism in translation. Within the first area, the study outlines the first references to non-professional translation as well as attempts to define this concept using various terms such as natural or native translation. The second part covers the current view on the given translation type and includes the basic division of its subcategories. Finally, the concluding part briefly presents scholars' views on the benefits and possible application of non-professional translation in the future.
