THE ROLE AND IMPORTANCE OF SUKRIYE DIKMEN IN TURKISH CONTEMPORARY ART

Summary/Abstract: Within the overall progress of Turkish Paintings in Turkey, although the effects of Western Art Movements which became evident in the Republic period can be seen clearly, it is also notable that some painters include national concepts and themes from that period in their paintings. The aim of this study which is conducted as a screening model, is to determine the role of Sukriye Dikmen -Turkish female painter- within the process of Turkish contemporary art formation. This study mainly deals with Sukriye Dikmen and the period her art life involved. Also the similarities with the works of local and foreign painters that Sukriye Dikmen may have been influenced are interpreted with examples and a general evaluation is conducted for emerging artist communities during this period in this study. In this process while Sukriye Dikmen’s artistic style adopts an original attitude with various formal elements, differences in material and color selection, the female images in paintings are shaped by her own interpretation and the contemporary women forms. The concept of simplicity that is observable in all of her paintings is one of Dikmen’s art’s distinguishing features. The painter's female figures, and numerous portraits, as well as striking motifs reminiscent of traditional Turkish culture from Turkey or from abroad painted landscapes and still-life paintings are also remarkable. It can be said that Dikmen concentrate on abstractions with aspects of mentioned themes in her recent years and simple expression elements remained unchanged. This research is a resource for the history of Contemporary Turkish Art with regard to a famous Turkish female painter’s works and style and examine the various aspects of Sukriye Dikmen’s art.
