Summary/Abstract: During the last twenty years, the Western Balkans has been the terrain of interstate and intrastate conflicts while the area is still considered partially instable by the collective image of peoples and politicians of the western EU countries. This article, through a description of the historic and institutional past of this territory, tries to shed light on the similarities and differences that characterise the countries having emerged from ex-Yugoslavia as well as on the economic and social factors that influenced the relatively non-consolidated democratic culture in these countries. This quick historic panorama emphasises some moments that constitute the foundations of ethnic conflicts and old animosities in the Western Balkans. It also introduces the idea of a broader regional collaboration with the aim of healing the wounds of the past.
