Summary/Abstract: This paper is an attempt to understand why social networks are massively used by young people today and what are the negative and positive effects of it? What are the most popular social networks and how much time do they spend using them? The purpose of the study is to measure not only how social networks are used but also to reveal the reasons why they have become massively used and to measure the effects that this excessive use has in the life of a young student. The focus of this study are young students and the aim is to discover the reason why they use them such as: virtual communication, information, entertainment or other purposes like promoting certain social causes, promoting various initiatives related to studies and areas of interest etc. Based on a mixture of qualitative and the quantitative methods, this study analyzes how much time youth spend using these social networks especially (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and Hi5). Empirical data were obtained through a questionnaire and the target group was compound of 200 you people from the age of 18 - over 22 years. The increasing use of new media is of special interest because we have to understand how much young people live are affected by them. The results show that in societies like ours, due to lack of control, social networks tends to bring more negative than positive consequences.
