Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes Ivan V. Lalic’s essays about the Serbian 20th century poets with the goal to fathom the poet’s poetical and literary-theoretical criteria, that is a specific mosaic picture of the epoch. In the process of evaluation, Lalic relied on the poetic individuality, viewing the poet in a broad comparative context and relating the poet’s first book with the poet’s choice (individual anthology). In the evaluation, the privileged position was given to the poets of the turning-point period, who contributed to extend the sensibility of the readers and expressive possibilities of the poetic language. Lalic’s important criteria are the complete poetic personality, talent, inner dictation, maturity and cerebrality, irony. Critical attitude to surrealism sheds a specific light on his poetics. In a dialogue with the contemporary poetry, Lalic sharpened his poetic principles and critical criteria, linking his poetic practice with the works of poets he liked and about whom he wrote.
