PETRIJA — AT THE DOUBLE PERIPHERY

Summary/Abstract: The paper points to different segments of Dragoslav Mihailovic’s Petrijin Venac (Petrija’s Garland) which are based on traditional culture and mythical type of thought (elements of folk beliefs, customs and speech, superstition, as a specific form of causality, sensual-concrete expression), but also to the main heroine Petrija Djordjevic’s diverging from the folk tradition and the corresponding type of understanding (attitude to tradition and curse, shifted images about a witch, irony, scepticism etc). Levitating between the traditional and the modern, that is Petrija’s double marginal position, as well as her great, true and deep loneliness, make this heroine — in spite of all superstition and illiteracy — an extremely modern character. Still, what distinguishes Petrija from numerous characters in modern prose is her extraordinary stoicism, faithfulness to life and strength to defend herself from evil and mischievous destiny in all the ways known to her, in spite of pain and suffering.
