Reflections on the Way Émile Verhaeren’s Literary Work Is Viewed in Spain

Summary/Abstract: In this article we are going to discuss about why some authorsalready famous in their native countries are not translated or are unknown inothers countries. Belgian symbolist poet Émile Verhaeren hasn’t had thesame impact on the Spanish audience as on that in other European countries.Nevertheless, Verhaeren’s central position in the Belgian literature inFrench contrasts with the peripheral position that he holds in the Hispanicarea. Verhaeren’s work is considered particularly unique within the generalsymbolist literary trend and specifically within Belgian Symbolism.However, the verhaerenian literary production has reached Spain in adiscontinuous way throughout the last century. The lack of an exhaustivetranslation of Verhaeren’s poetry is a remarkable gap in the Spanishtranslated literature, therefore a full-fledged translation would be highlyrecommendable, first of all, through an anthology of poems with thepurpose of making known Verhaeren’s work in Spain. This publishedanthology would set a precedent for spreading verhaereanian poetry bytranslating his finest collections of poems.
