BACHTIN AND INTERPRETATIONS OF SHAKESPEARE'S HISTORICAL DRAMAS: CARNIVAL AND HETEROGLOSSIA

Summary/Abstract: This paper examines a number of contemporary interpretations of Shakespeare's history plays based on M. M. Bakhtin's concepts of carnival, grotesque realism, dialogism and polyphony. All of the mentioned concepts proved to be productive hermeneutical strategies in the approaches to Shakespeare's history plays and have generated a number of insightful texts. However, there is a distinction between the authors who have commented on the carnival and grotesque realism, and the ones who have concentrated on the dialogism and polyphony. The former have followed Bakhtin's suggestions concerning Shakespeare given in Rabelais and His World, and the latter have interpreted and extended his theoretical concepts in a Bakhtinian sense, but against Bakhtin's own declarative statement concerning Shakespeare's drama and dramatic genres in general.
