Voltaire’s Conception of Gens de Lettres

Summary/Abstract: In my paper I analyze Voltair´s conception of gens de lettres expressed in his article in Encyclopédie (1757) and compare it to his approach in Lettres philosophiques (1734) and Dictionnaire philosophique (1764). Voltair´s characterization is compared to the conception of other Encyclopedists and their project to reform the Republic of Lettres. The conception of gens de lettres embraces the qualities of philosophes and expresses the French Enlightenment ideal of the transfer of knowledge between science, philosophy and literature.
