Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes meanings of the names of the characters in Toni Morrison’s novels Song of Solomon and Beloved and the ways Morrison links them to American and African American culture. Morrison emphasizes relevancy of the names of the characters in her novels by placing them in the particular socio-political and historical framework. She focuses on the strategies which African Americans used to create new identity for themselves such as changing of the connotative meaning of names, irony, and subversion.
