Summary/Abstract: Sociological studies of intimate couples are associated with a number of ethical dilemmas. Some of them are connected to studying private life, which implies the questions about why, how and under what conditions the research participants share their experiences with researchers, and what kind of research relationship is formed between these two parties. We consider such problems as: a symmetry of the researcher’s relationship with the couple, the problem of using knowledge acquired only from one person from the couple in such a way that does not harm the couple, and the specific dilemmas related to power relations between researchers and research participants as well as the roles that a couple assigns to researchers. We discuss these dilemmas using the examples from our own fieldwork carried out within three different research projects.
