The Grounds of Cognition

Summary/Abstract: In this study I am concerned with one of the most fundamental problems of the philosophy of mind and cognitive science, namely the question regarding the mark or criteria of mind. I want to specify this broad question in the following way: in my study I would like to find out what those fundamental capacities are that can be shown as necessary for an entity in the world to count as cognitive. We have an intuition that there are criteria according to which some entities in the world, although can hugely differ in complexity, nonetheless can all be part of the class of minded beings. But how can we specify the mark of the cognitive? I think that there are some crucial concepts, like embodiment, agency, teleology, normativity, motivational basis, sense-making etc., which can be regarded as the fundamental categories in the theoretical frame of studying the grounds of cognition. In this respect I am following the paradigm of embodied cognition, more precisely the enactive approach. For me, the most exciting question in this field consists in the following problem: is life a necessary, constitutive element in being minded? Is cognition possible in systems which are not living?
