Summary/Abstract: This paper pays tribute to Roland Barthes and his critical, theoretical and methodological legacy. Hundred years after his birth we can fully recognize his major role as one of the most influential intellectual figures of the 20th century and his deep and far- reaching impact on literary theory and social sciences. Barthes introduced us to genuine critical thinking and the decoding of not only literary, but of all kinds of phenomena, relying upon Saussurean notion of the linguistic sign. He also liberated the text and formulated his famous idea of the death of the author. Among many other milestone achievements, he emphasized the crucial role of the reader in creating the meaning of the text and clearly insisted on its plurality.
