Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes the development of the historical consciousness in the works of the American novelist Don DeLillo, from the author’s idea of history to the literary devices which generate a new tragic narrative for the contemporary society. One of the central problems in DeLillo’s oeuvre is the crisis of narrative, provoked by the absurdity of the events which have shaped modern American history. Examining the stylistic, thematic and conceptual changes in DeLillo’s novels, especially the gradual shift from a poetics of noise to a poetics of silence, the paper will explore some new ways in which contemporary literature approaches the incomprehensible, from Kennedy’s assassination to the horrors of 9/11.
