Summary/Abstract: Oration on Saint Prince Lazar, written by the unknown monk from Ravanica monastery, belongs to a wider circle of Serbian medieval orations and other literary works that aim at artistic transposition of the Battle of Kosovo and the heroic death of Prince Lazar, as well as the establishment of the cult of Lazar as the new Christian martyr. This paper deals with rhetorical elements of the Oration, inherited from the traditional ancient rhetoric, via byzantine literature, concentrating on common places (loci communes) and their role in the process of literary and rhetorical shaping. Using the method of topical analysis, the paper is trying to reveal the specific characteristics of the unknown monk’s writing style, by explaining the ways in which he managed to rethink and reform the models that have already existed, and to be innovative without exiting the framework that was given and that was obligatory.
