Summary/Abstract: Various terms are used for meaning of mental retardation.By using mind incapacity, In 2002 instruction of AAMR (American Association of Mental Retardation ), ‘mental retardation’ is described as an incapacity which is characterized as meaningful restraints in both coordinational behaviours of mental functions and conceptual, social and practical coordinational abilities. When the individual is gained the necessary knowledge and abilities, it is emphasized that the incapacity is prevented to become a disability when some changes is done in social and sometimes in physical environment. In this context, with its various application diversity, the visual arts address various development and learning fields and give an opportunity fort he expressions of the emotion and thought and create peaceful ambience; and because of these reasons, it can be said that it is an important field that should be benefited from in rehabilitation of the impaired individuals. This research aims to determine the opinions in literature and researches with respect to the place and importance of the education of visual arts in the education of the mentally handicapped individuals.
