Identifying the Methods and Activities Used in Life Studies Courses: An Examination of Postgraduate Theses

Summary/Abstract: This study aims to examine the postgraduate theses which use instructional methods and activities in Life Studies courses and were written at different universities of Turkey between the years of 1999 and 2015. To this end, 32 theses which are accessible and use diverse instructional methods and activities were identified out of 154 theses related to Life Studies course in the thesis database of the Council of Higher Education. Document review was used as a data collection instrument to analyze what instructional methods and activities, type of research, data collection instruments, and results achieved in the study affect positively or negatively in the theses. The data obtained show that there are 26 postgraduate theses and 6 doctoral theses regarding the use of instructional methods in Life Studies courses. It was also determined that experimental studies are the most conducted studies among them which are followed by mixed studies and action research studies. 19 different methods/activities were used in the studies. It was found that the most used method is drama which is followed by multiple intelligence activities. Moreover, theses achieved positive results in general. It was, however, determined that trainings provided in 7 of the quantitative had a positive impact on academic achievement while negative results were observed for their effects on other variables. It was concluded that trainings provided in the qualitative studies had positive effects on students in accordance with the variables examined.
