Summary/Abstract: The first theoretical debate between realism and idealism in International Relations has affected states’ foreign policies. Within this context, Iran’s foreign policy orientations after the Islamic Revolution is a good example. After the Islamic Revolution; Iran, which pursued idealistic and religious policies by embracing the “regime export” statement specially in Middle East; is showing a pragmatic nation-state reflex which refuses religious idealism in its Central Asia policies. The situation reveals that Iran has deep rooted state tradition. This differentiation which results from Iran’s political orientations, makes it possible to locate Iran’s Central Asia policy in realist theory. This article is analyzing the differentiations in Iran’s foreign policy orientations in a theoretical framework by making comparisons.
