Summary/Abstract: This work examines the translator's collective identities that have been constructed through history at a particular moment in a given social space. Its aim is to explore the role of translators in the construction of professional identity, thereby gaining a better understanding of translators as "agents of change". For this purpose, the discourses of the leading translators from antiquity to the 19th century are analyzed. In this essay, identities are understood as multiple, context-related, (re-) constructible phenomena. The analysis of identity discourses revealed that translators throughout history (re) constructed new self-images that made the translator visible as a language developer, educator, and author.
