Summary/Abstract: This study tests alternative schedules for the optimization of the shift plans of security guards working in a General Directorate of Higher Education Credit and Hostels Institution for ABC University. A continuous three shift working system is practiced in the institution, and according to the present regulations there are only female guards in women’s hostels, and male guards in those of men. Both male and female officials stand guard at the outer door. Security guards are employed either permanently or on contract basis. The model developed in this study optimizes the number of guards as well as shift allocations. In the current system, the number of male security guards on contract is 40, the number of male security guards on permanent employment is 5 whereas the number of female security guards on contract is 25, totaling a 70 security guards. In the proposed model, it is seen that the number of male security guards on contract falls from 40 to 37, the number of female security guards on contract falls from 25 to 21, and the number of total security guards falls from 70 to 63. A model is proposed in which the institution would save 168.000 TL per year by making a total of 7 security personnel redundant. A work schedule designating the security personnel’s weekly working days, working hours and days on leave is thus prepared.
