Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficiency of probation process, which has been effectively used in our country, for rehabilitation and treatment of drug users that have been directed to an ASATC unit from a social work perspective. The study was conducted in Ege University, Faculty of Medicine Addiction Psychiatry Clinic on a sample of 302 participants out of 692 who applied to the clinic between 01.10.2014 and 31.03.2015 and volunteered for the study. A questionnaire developed by the researcher was used as data collection tool, and the collected data was analyzed in IBM SPSS 15.0 software program. According to the findings, more than half of the participants are younger than 25; the most commonly used drug is marijuana; and the average drug history is 5-6 years. The relationship between duration of drug use and the participants’ age is statistically significant, and the most frequently cited reason in starting drug use is detected as “curiosity”. Although majority of the participants believe that probation is effective in terms of creating awareness and consciousness about addiction, a considerable part of the participants find the process inconclusive. All in all; whereas it is an important finding for the future prospects of the probation practice that majority of the participants believe it is helpful, overall findings point to a need for more efficient functioning of the probation practice. In this context, it is assumed that probation process could be more efficiently utilized with a multidisciplinary approach and via increased cooperation between institutions.
