Summary/Abstract: This paper comprises an analysis of the role played by languages in the nationalist discourse of the 19th century, as mirrored by the Romanian national movement in Habsburg Bukovina. Relevant to this topic are for instance the development of a modern school system, the ethnic diversity of the population and the connections between the Romanians in Bukovina and those outside the borders of the Crown land. The paper aims to illustrate the mutual influence between language and national conscience.
