Summary/Abstract: This essay is a survey of the problems and potentialities of Italian in the world. It is a ‘think piece’, non a data-based essay, as the data are already available in the documents of the Stati Generali dell’Italiano nel Mondo. The main lines of though are two. Firstly, a look at the ‘market of languages’ in a world that, after the rush towards globalisation some 20 year ago, is now moving to a more balanced perspecive, glocalisation, which seems fruitful for the spread of Italian. Secondly, a discussionof the main factors of ‘total quality policy’, a notion used in marketing which we have applied to the promotion of Italian. What emerges is less dark than it seems to be in conferences of Italian teachers and scholars: theer are some positive points, together with critical points which however seem to me rather manageable.
