Guido Gozzano and the European Culture

Summary/Abstract: The study aims at reviewing the close relation that exists between Gozzano’s literary creation and the decadent European poetics, especially the French and Belgian ones. Contrary to what has been maintained, Gabriele d’Annunzio did not always act as a mediator, but there was a direct relation between the Piedmontese author and these poetics without d’Annunzio’s intervention. This is particularly true as far as the Parnassian movement is concerned, which is fundamental in order to understand Gozzano’s mature works. The particular Decadence of Gozzano’s works place him in a European context, outside the literary trend that was naively termed “Crepuscularism”.
