Summary/Abstract: Deverbal nouns, in addition to the event meaning of the base verb, have often developed ‘lexical cycles’ (Simone 2000), that is systematic, regular and hierarchical semantic extensions. The rhetorical mechanism operating in all lexical cycles is metonymy: it converts, for proximity, real, default and metonymic arguments into linguistic entities. Deverbal nouns regularly proceeding firstly activate meanings related to subevents, then those concerning the roles of argument structure and finally those connected to metonymic arguments.
