Summary/Abstract: There is one overriding objective in the literary oeuvre by U. Karatkevitch, namely that the writer tried to enliven and strengthen the weakened sense of national identity among the Belarusians. In the 1950s and the 1960s, it was far from easy in the USSR to encourage and propagate genuine and true Belarusian history, the beauty of the Belarusian language and Belarusian national identity. For his activities in this field, Karatkevitch was often stigmatized and punished. The article presents the hardships of the Belarusian writer, his struggles against censorship as well as unfavourable literary critics.
