Summary/Abstract: Il nome della rosa (1980) by Umberto Eco is one of the most representative exemples of postmodern italian romance and it combines the historic tradition with the multiplicity of modernity. The library – labyrinth is a combination of history, myth and literary imagination. With this fictional object the builders of the labyrinth and the monks have created a tangle of spaces, books and words comparable to the labyrinths of Joyce, Borges and Calvino. The labyrinth is an important element for Adso and Jorge adventures also because it becomes the mirror of a century, the Twentieth century, and of a ‘liquid’ society.
