The challenges of multilingualism in the past and today: the role of Italian from the Habsburg Monarchy up to the European Union.

Summary/Abstract: At the beginning of the 19th century the Habsburg Monarchy had about 51 million inhabitants and 15 nationalities. The article deals with some aspects of language practice in the Austrian Littoral between 1867 and 1918. During this period they had to manage language conflicts every day. A law from 1867 stated the equality of all languages of the Monarchy which finally led to even more conflicts. Multilingualism became an old-fashioned term and monolingualism the modern ideal. The language Policies and Practice of the European Union are an example of peaceful coexistence of languages today.
