The Ombudsman in the System of Media Self- Regulation

Summary/Abstract: This article presents suggestions for overcoming some deficiencies within the system of media regulation in Bulgaria and for enhancing the system of media professional self-regulation through developing the mechanisms of regulated self-regulation. This research offers arguments in favor of the potential benefits from assigning media oversight practices to the responsibilities of the national ombudsman. The characteristics of the ombudsman institution could be considered as a good foundation for expanding its authority, which might also include protection of citizens in cases of human rights violation by the media.
