Summary/Abstract: Problems with the Turkish and Hungarian forces coerced Prince Lazarus’ widow to accept alliance with the Turks. Survival of the state depended on her decision, and she was forced to give her daughter Olivera to the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I. The playwright Mita Dimitrijević took the story of Olivera’s sacrifice for the well-being of the Serbian people as an inspiration for the drama Olivera. The aim of this paper is to present the process of shaping the character of Sultan Bayezid. Major research attention will be focused on Bayezid’s relationship with Olivera, the youngest daughter of Prince Lazarus and Princess Milica, for the purpose of the precise analysis of Sultan Bayezid’s actions and transformation. It will be determined to what extent the playwright was relying on the historical writings and medieval literature during the creation of the drama.
