Summary/Abstract: The review introduces the new book of Erzsébet Szalai, and it interrogates the question of how the habitus, identity and personality of contemporary Hungarian youth have been developing over the past twenty years. Does this youth share great generational experiences and can it develop into a new generation? The review explores how young people experience semi-peripheral capitalism in the light of the life-history interviews that are the main sources of the book, and how they try to rebel – if they try at all – in an environment, which lacks the theoretical and structural pre-conditions of rebelling. Individuals can do little to change these conditions but a community can be more effective if young people can find common co-ordinates in the civil sphere.
