Summary/Abstract: When I got the invitation to participate in the Cracow seminar and started to think about my contribution, I soon realised what a fascinating theme this is. There are some good studies, true, but usually the subject has been given little attention indeed. And yet it has important historical and philological significance. For us, the text divisions are a convenient way of reference, which is easily taken as granted. In Greek and Latin literature, where they were standardised centuries ago, they form a valuable system with which it is not so important which edition you use (if it gives the correct text). In most cases one can easily find the passage referred to. In the case of classical Indian texts, there are many analogous cases, but problems soon start piling up.
