Summary/Abstract: The author of this article tries to present the development of the idea of the preferential option for the poor in the social teaching of the Church after the Second Vatican Council. Love for the poor was always present in the teaching and activity of the Catholic Church. The teaching of the Second Vatican Council concerning the mission of Christians in social life, developed and deepened by the local churches of South America (Conference in Medellin - Columbia 1968, Conference in Puebla - Mexico 1979) gave as follows: this preferential option for the poor at present is to give people deprived of the fundamental rights of the human person a special role in the community of the Church. The same teaching of the Church claims respect for the rights of men from natural as well as supernatural dignity. Knowing this teaching can contribute to an in-depth reflection on the place and mission of the Church in Polish society, the great part of which suffers because of the formation of democratic and economic structures (free market).
