Summary/Abstract: The prefix przy- added to a prefixless verb-may sometimes change the syntagmatic connectibillty of the morphological root. Such changes are most frequently determined by the meaning of the prefix przy-. Transition from Accusatival to Genitival construction is brought about by the following senses carried by the prefix przy-: 1) adding something, increasing the amount of something e.g. przyłupać czego, przymieszać czego; 2) partial completion of some action e.g. przytracić czego, przytrzed czego. The connotation of adveblal expressions do 4- Genitive is connected with verbs in which the prefix przy- carries the following senses: 1) reaching some destination e.g. przywinąć do czego, przypławić się do czego) 2) fixing things, combining things together e.g. przybić do czego, przyszyć do czego. There is also a group of verbs connoting the expression do + Genitive in which the prefix przy- carries different senses e.g. przyznać się do czego, przyuczyć się do czego. The change of rection from Accusatival to Datival seems not to be determi¬ned by the meaning of the prefix przy-. In such cases we have to do with verbs belonging to various semantic groups. However, this type of change in rection is very rare in derivates with the prefix przy-. The conferring of transitivity on verbs by the prefix przy- is also very infrequent and seems to have no connection with the sense carried by the prefix. The transition of construction from Accusitival to Genitival and the con¬notation of the adverbal expression do + Genitive are the most frequent cases.
