Sublimed Eros in the Poem Noć skuplja vijeka (A Night More Precious Than A Century)

Summary/Abstract: In this paper Njegoš’s poem Noć skuplja vijeka is analyzed from the viewpoint of ‘mystic paneroticism’ as its primary inspiration. In that vein the paper investigates the nature of the sexual Eros in it in the context of the ontology of love of the Song of Songs, Plato and Apostle Paul. The paper proves that Njegoš’s poem grew out of the Plato-Paul idea of Eros as a subliming and reforming force of life and that there are no deep, internal conflicts with the Biblical and Christian learning on sexuality and human body. The collisions with Christian apologism do not refer to the “internal universe of the poem” but to the plain of the reception and readers’ preconceptions on the poem and the poet.
