Maritime industries as an European Union innovation and economic activity areas

Summary/Abstract: The EU’s maritime economy represents more than 5.5 million jobs. Maritime industries create gross added value of just under €600 billion per year. In all, ¾ of Europe’s external trade and 40% of trade within the EU is seaborne. Much of maritime economy activity (tourism, shipbuilding, aqucaulture) is concentrated around Europe’s coasts. The sea and the coasts are drivers of the EU economy and creating demand for innovation and smart solutions. Main maritime industries activities in the article are presented.
