Summary/Abstract: A tendency to shorten the working time has been observed all over the world since the 19th century. However, the reduction to 35 hours worked weekly, resulting from a reform implemented in France in the years 1999-2002, was an unprecedented event. The reform was introduced in several stages. In the short term, it enabled the creation of 350,000 workplaces and increased the productivity of workers. Nevertheless, it also led to higher labour costs and to a number of difficulties for enterprises. As a result, the economic situation of the country deteriorated and the unemployment rate increased in the long term.
